Dumb cooking ideas

I've been trying to figure out some ways to streamline the cooking that needs to be done here. This week I seem to be trying all kinds of things that don't work.

I like homemade pizza crust and I found a great one at allrecipes.com. It isn't hard to make the crust, but in the interest of shaving a little bit of time and effort from the process, I decided to try putting all the ingredients into my bread machine and letting it deal with all the mixing and rising. Two hours later, I had a gummy mess of dough that still needed kneading. In addition, the crust was the worst I had ever made (but the same recipe, done by hand, was one of my best).

I also decided to try baking a chicken in my crock pot. I am aware that baking a chicken in the oven is almost easier than boiling water, but I was trying to figure out a way that we could have baked chicken in the summer without heating up the oven on a hot day. The chicken was OK--Derek thought it was dry and I thought it was mushy. I think the best way to bake a chicken without heating up the house is to drive to the store and buy a rotisserie chicken.

Have you tried a beer can chicken on the grill? We got an actual apparatus that holds the chicken and the beer from Darren's parents, but have yet to try it. To be honest, I have never cooked a whole chicken. I might have to give it a try next week!
