June, 1986

I could fill several blog postings with why I decided to be a teacher. Let me show you one of the reasons I stay a teacher:
This is a picture of me and Steph taken on the last day of eighth grade. Despite our mouths full of braces and our general awkwardness, I love this picture. The fashions may have changed and kids may get to wear clear braces these days, but this is pretty typical of what I see in my job every day. Kids come to school to hang out with their friends and figure out what's in style and get some time away from their parents. The academic side is secondary to most. I've put some of the best years of my adult life into the academic side of school and it can be pretty tough to realize that, for a lot of the kids a lot of the time, that just isn't important. Some days it saves my sanity to know that the girl I wrote notes to during Spanish 2 (the class) is the woman I write emails to during Spanish 2 (my job) and that her phone number is one of the few that I can call by memory. It helps me look at those kids and understand why they do it.
