A few days ago my mom mentioned that she had gotten out her Christmas cards and had read over a couple of decades of her yearly summary. I think she even said, "It's lucky that we wrote those every year. I'm not sure I would have remembered what we did." I smugly said that I didn't need a Christmas letter to keep track of the year because I have my blog. I think that was the point at which my mom said, "When did you last write about anything other than Elsa?"
Touché.
So I am going to write about my Spring Break to prove that I can write about something other than Elsa. And because I can barely remember what I did on Saturday, which may mean that I am in great danger of remembering nothing about my own life.
Friday, 3:15:01 PM, the first minute of Spring Break. I was GIDDY. I raced out of school, picked up Elsa, went to the grocery store and rented a movie. Fell asleep 15 minutes in to Kitchen Nightmares, which makes that about the 900th TV show I've missed. I LOVE (love, love, love) my DVR--I'd never see complete episodes of TV shows without DVR. I'm going to assume that Gordon Ramsey got the restaurant fixed, because that's what happens every time I stay awake through the show.
Saturday Family trip to Kohls. Derek and Elsa went home and I went on to the Neat Repeetz consignment sale. I love consignment sales almost as much as I love my DVR. They are the perfect way to buy clothes for small children. Elsa now has a pretty decent summer wardrobe. (yeah!) I helped my mom order some new pictures of Elsa for her picture book. (side note: Before Elsa was born, my mom said to me, "We won't really need a lot of pictures. We aren't in to pictures." Um, yeah, I'm laughing so hard right now that there are tears in my eyes.) I took a short nap and then started dinner. We watched the movie I rented (In Bruges), but agreed that it wasn't so good.
Sunday We didn't get moving fast enough to get to church. Derek ran a few errands and I cleaned out several drawers and cupboards in our kitchen. Yes, that was on my Spring Break to do list. And yes, it made me feel incredibly good to get those things done. No one who walks in to the kitchen would notice that it is any different, but I know and that's what counts. I also made a chicken and rice casserole from my new cook book, which is based on this blog. I think it turned out well and wasn't too hard to make. I have plans to try out a few more recipes from the cook book. I'll keep you posted.
Monday I had grand plans of being at the gym by 7:30, but that just didn't happen. Elsa and I both slept late (the time change has been hard for her) and then I just fiddled around. Just as I was getting my shoes on for the gym, Elsa started playing with my shoe and she was just so cute that I couldn't stop her. She was completely entertained by the shoe and I think she might have been talking to it just a little. I got out of the house almost an hour later than I planned to. After my morning things, my mom and I went to lunch at a little wine bistro by my parents' house. I learned a food truth: Nebraska may not be the best place to order a Cuban sandwich (which, like many things Cuban, really comes from Miami). I get excited every time I see a Cuban sandwich on a menu because they are SO GOOD, but I'm not sure that I've had a good Cuban sandwich outside of Florida. The Cuban sandwich may be the one thing that can get me to visit Florida again. (Well, I'd visit the Keys again because the fish are so cool and Derek really loves fish. I'd love to see the Keys with Derek.) Mom and I went shopping, but neither of us found anything good.
Tune in later for more Spring Break excitement...
